Thai Kratom is a respected and renowned strain from Thailand, also known as 'The Land of Smiles'. It attracts a loyal following for its unique alkaloid profile, which produces a variety of practical reactions. This variant could be your ticket if you need motivation or sedation.

Read on to discover more about Thai Kratom. We introduce the different colors and explain their relevance. Learn about the various consumption methods and their respective pros and cons. Understand the wide-ranging effects and what they could do for you.

What is Thai Kratom?

Kratom is a tropical evergreen tree scientifically called Mitragyna speciosa. A member of the Rubiaceae family, it’s related to coffee. It grows naturally around 50 feet tall in the jungles of Southeast Asia.

Thai Kratom is a potent strain from Thailand. Its native to the lush tropical jungle, and locals call it thom.

As well as Thailand, Kratom grows wild in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. It is farmed throughout Southeast Asia; growers pick the leaves in specific seasons before drying and crushing them.

For centuries, Kratom has been used as herbal medicine and in traditional ceremonies, with different colors and strains producing distinct effects useful in rituals and naturopathy.

Kratom contains more than 40 alkaloids. The main psychoactive components are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. In low doses it’s a stimulant, while high amounts induce a sedative effect.

Thai locals commonly consume Kratom in tea to disguise the bitter taste and they frequently add lemon juice to facilitate the extraction of alkaloids. The bitterness is often offset with sweeteners like sugar or honey.

While smoking the leaves is rare, workers in laborious conditions often chew the leaves for energy. The belief is that chewing several leaves at once boosts energy and productivity. They usually remove the veins and add salt, apparently to avoid constipation.

The most common way to consume Kratom, however, is in powder form. The powder, made from leaves that have been fine-milled, dissolves easily in various foods and drinks.

Is Thai Kratom different from Maeng Da Kratom?

Although Maeng Da is a type of kratom from Thailand, it isn’t the same as Thai Kratom. Thai Kratom is native to the country and grows naturally. Maeng Da is a cultivated hybrid, crossbred over generations.

Scientific testing shows variations in the composition of different strains. Researchers think the disparities result from geographic distribution and leaf maturity (color). The dominant local ecotypes also affect makeup, for instance, the alkaloid proportions can produce dramatic variations in pharmacological effects.

Maeng Da Kratom is actually an umbrella term for a high-quality Kratom product. It translates to 'pimp grade' in the local language. It’s usually the most potent alternative, adding to its popularity. Maeng Da is unique because producers don’t restrict themselves to a single area.

Red Thai offers an exceptional starting point for first-time users. It boasts a stimulating aroma and may induce a range of effects. Green Thai is a milder option that can improves focus and elevate mood. The flavor is less intense, and the effects may be more relaxed. Finally, White Thai might boost mood and positivity, encouraging long-lasting energy.

What are the effects of Thai Kratom?

Kratom can be a stimulant or produce opioid-like analgesic effects. Much depends on the size of the dose. Light or moderate dosage (1–5 grams) causes mental stimulation. Moderate to large portions (5–15 grams) present balanced effects. Very high doses (over 15 grams) result in sedative reactions.

Below are some common effects of Thai Kratom:

  • Increases energy
  • Eases discomfort
  • Reduces opioid cravings or withdrawal symptoms
  • Boosts mental health
  • Enhances mood and positivity

Potency depends on the age and plant, the local environment and when it was harvested. Most strains of dried leaf contain a total alkaloid concentration of about 1%.

In Thai varieties, mitragynine accounts for 66% of total alkaloid with 7-hydroxymitragynine a distant second at 2%.

Locals use Kratom as a traditional medicine for a variety of reasons:

  • for pain relief
  • to improve sexual desire
  • as an energy boost
  • to stave off tiredness
  • as a local anaesthetic
  • as a cough suppressant
  • to kill intestinal worms
  • to halt an episode of diarrhea
  • as an anti-diabetic
  • to uplift mood
  • to heighten mental focus
  • as a diet aid

What colors does Thai Kratom come in?

Thai Kratom comes in three distinct colors, each boasting various reactions. The colors demonstrate maturity. Farmers harvest white strains early when the leaf veins are pale. Green strains are the intermediate option, while red strains are collected last.

You can read more about Kratom colors here.

What forms does Thai Kratom come in?

Locals traditionally chewed leaves or brewed tea with kratom. Today, consumers have plenty of choices. Modern Thai Kratom is a popular strain that comes in a variety of forms including:

  • Powder
  • Capsules
  • Liquid extracts
